Hair loss can also be caused by diabetes

Nowadays, more and more people are affected by some type of diabetes, regardless of age or gender. The root cause of diabetes is a malfunctioning pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin in our body, a hormone that helps the body to metabolise. Only with the help of insulin can the body extract glucose from the blood, which is an essential source of energy for cells. The liver also constantly produces glucose, which by itself can keep blood sugar levels up and provide energy for the cell. However, the liver produces more sugar than it needs. Normally, the presence of insulin reduces the liver's sugar production. Diabetics lack this, which is why they have high blood sugar levels.

Two types of diabetes are distinguished by their severity. In type 1 diabetes, the insulin- producing cells are completely destroyed and insulin has to be replaced externally. In type 2 diabetics, the body produces insulin, just not enough.
For them, the treatment involves a change of lifestyle, regular exercise and a diabetic diet. Medication may also be needed as a supplement.

Blood glucose testing can quickly identify diabetics, but those who do not have regular blood tests may also have some telltale signs. These include frequent urination, unusual thirst and hunger, sudden weight loss and even hair loss.

In diabetic patients, increased hair loss or thinning of the hairs may be due to inadequate blood supply. In diabetics, the walls of the blood vessels thicken and the arteries narrow. The blood cannot deliver sufficient oxygen to the cells, including the hair follicles. The low blood supply can cause hair to become dull and lose its shine.

If you notice the first signs of baldness, don't be shy to consult an expert, as there are many possible causes! Apart from diabetes, it can be a result of an inappropriate lifestyle, lack of exercise, stress or mental fatigue, or even serious organ problems. Unfortunately, there is no medication for hereditary baldness. Hair lost in this way can only be regained through hair transplantation.
